Object Description

A fine George III period bow-fronted mahogany chest of drawers, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London.
English, c. 1790

Why we like it
This remarkably well drawn design was introduced by the Gillows firm as early as in late 1780’s. This particularly rare survivor of the earlier examples, remarkably, still retains all its original pressed brass handles and locks, as well as the original pale-blue paper drawer linings. Beautifully original unrestored condition with remarkably little wear and superb mellow colour and rich patination.

A conforming Gillows design for a commode, dated 24.10.1789, is published in L.Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs from 1760 to 1800, fig. 118.

Established in the early 18th century, Gillows of Lancaster are among the few most celebrated English furniture makers, famed for their use of fine timbers and exceptional quality of craftsmanship.

Object Condition

Beautifully original unrestored condition with remarkably little wear and superb mellow colour and rich patination. Original pressed brass handles and locks, as well as the original pale-blue paper drawer linings
