Object Description

No: 10788

A George III Period Oak Welsh dresser, with moulded open fret cornice above a series of shelves flanked by Rosewood crossbanded pilasters and Doric Columns, the base fitted with drawers and cupboards with brass knob handles and with neo classical urn inlays to the stiles and all raised on bracket feet. The turned columns to the rack and the mouldings to the cupboard doors are Yewwood and the spandrels are Mahogany.

The urn inlays are helpful in dating this piece to the end of the 18th. century. These classical icons on a piece of “town” furniture would date it to about 1775 and highly fashionable. On a piece of vernacular Oak furniture such as this dresser, one would expect a date of some 15 to 20 years later as it took some time for fashions to percolate down. We see this particularly when looking at Silver Candlesticks and their Brass counterparts where a fashionable silver model is imitated in Brass some 20 years later.
