Object History

Provenance: Formerly at Castle Howard, where a collection of John Linnell’s furniture can still be found, and almost certainly commissioned
by the 5th Earl of Carlisle, a client and patron of John Linnell.
This piece was stored by the distinguished removals company Jas Bowman & Son of York in the early 20th century. Their label along with the house inventory number – 862,
can be seen on the back of the cabinet.
The drawer front labels refer to rooms and sections of Castle Howard.
Castle Howard is synonymous with Evelyn Waugh’s iconic novel Brideshead Revisited which was adapted and first broadcast in 1981 and catapulted Castle Howard into the public eye. This unique cabinet is therefore part of television as well as English history.
