Object Description

A good looking antique sterling silver mug of baluster form with scroll handle. Classic plain style. With hand engraved owners initials on the handle (more usually found on the lidded tankards of this period). Contains 450 ml. Weight 364 grams, 11.7 troy ounces. Height 12 cm. Spread 12.4 cm. Diameter 8.2 cm (top). London 1774. Maker John Payne.

Biography – John Payne, London silversmith, son of Humphrey Payne and apprenticed to his father 1733, free 1740. Livery 1740. Court 1747. 1st mark entered 1751. Warden 1760-2. Prime warden 1765.

Object Condition

This handsome drinking mug is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Good colour. Stamped underneath with a full and clear set of English silver hallmarks.
