Object Description
A large size antique sterling silver salver with bead border and splay feet. Hand engraved to the top surface is a magnificent oak leaf and acorn border with an armorial and leaf cartouche to the centre. Weight 1845 grams, 59.3 troy ounces. Diameter 47 cm. Height 4.2 cm. London 1786. Maker Crouch and Hannam.
Biography – Thomas Hannam completed his apprenticeship to John CafĂ© in 1761 and went into partnership with John Crouch in 1765. The firm was known particularly as makers of fine quality trays, salvers and waiters. Their earlier marks also appear on cast candlesticks, very likely due to Hannam’s apprenticeship to the Cafes.
