Object Description

A lovely antique silver serving tureen of globular form having plain styling and broad gadroon borders. Large size and very good weight. A particularly nice feature is the wheatsheaf design top finial topped by foliage and fruits. To the front there is a hand engraved armorial with the motto “Promisso Sto”; the lid bears a dog crest.
Weight 3741 grams, 120.2 troy ounces.
Height 19cm (without lid), 27cm (to top of lid finial). Diameter 29cm. Spread across the handles 36cm.
London 1807.
Maker Richard Cook.
Sterling silver.
Signed/Inscribed. Below the tureen is the inscription “BDS – RSS Jnr, January 20, 1933, Maximilian Safron III”

RICHARD COOKE
Richard Cooke, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. Only mark entered as plateworker 1799. Arthur Grimwade describes his work as good standard and Cooke probably supplied one of the leading retailers Rundell & Co or Jefferys, Jones and Gilbert.e

Object Condition

The silver tureen is in very good condition. Both pieces are stamped with a full and matching set of English silver hallmarks. There are a couple of minor superficial dinks.
Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
