(It’s often debated whether miniature furniture was
made by workshop apprentices looking
for a job by showcasing their talents, or in fact
made as travelling salesman’s scale models in advance
of a road trip around the country showing prospective clients
the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and
take orders. This particular miniature chest would almost certainly
have been made as a salesman’s sample piece, due to its overall
quality and design and the fact it has been constructed from
highly figured mahogany, The brass knobs are later replacements
but sit well on the piece and the unusually bold splay feet are
very much original. There is also working locks and keys.)
