Object Description

Georgian Bracket clock in a serpentine top Rosewood case with applied carved decoration and side pilasters strung with brass inlay standing on brass claw bracket feet.

Engraved cast bezel, original side fishscale frets and side handles. Convex glass and dial, the dial with Roman numerals inscribed ‘John Grant, Fleet Street, London’.

Fine quality five pillar double Fusee movement with strike / silent and pull repeat facility of eight day duration striking the hours on a large silvered bell. C.1830.

‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World’ by Brian Loomes lists two John Grant’s working in Fleet Street the second entry being the maker of this beautiful clock from 1817 to 1867 and born in 1796, son of the first John Grant also a clockmaker working in Fleet Street from 1781-1817. Interestingly the book ‘ The Georgian Bracket Clock’ by R.Barder shows an example of a satinwood cased bracket clock, there is also another example of one of his bracket clocks on page.187.
