Object Description

An elegant antique sterling silver wine label of curved rectangular form with wriggle-work border and engraved “PORT”. An attractive feature is the domed top with pierced scroll decoration.

Weight 8 grams.
Length 4.5 cms. Width 1.1/1.5 cm.
Unmarked silver.
Circa 1770

Object Literature

Wine Labels, also known as “bottle tickets”, appear to have originated in the second quarter of the 18th century. They were made in many attractive designs and a are a popular collecting field. Among the many good makers are Hester Bateman and family, Phipps & Robinson, Samuel Bradley, Mary Binley and Paul Storr.
