Object Description

This is a very beautiful hand painted dinner plate, produced by the Spode factory in the late Georgian period, Circa 1820.

This is pattern number 2283, the chinoiserie decoration being carefully and beautifully hand-painted in bold colored enamels of burnt orange and cobalt blue, with much additional gilding over-glaze. The pattern shows a flower basket to the central well, with a four section floral design to the cavetto. The reverse has two floral sprigs to the rim and a cafe-au-lait brown rim.

The pattern is virtually a direct copy of the earlier flower basket patterns on Chinese porcelain plates, as produced by other English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese export porcelain from China.

The plate is fully marked to the base, with “SPODES STONE CHINA” printed mark in cobalt blue, as used on their stone china or Ironstone wares, together with the pattern number 2283, hand-painted in red on the inner rim, near the mark.

We date this fine plate to circa 1820, the mark being in use circa 1820.
