Object Description
A mid 19th century German antique stained glass window depicting the Danse Macabre or Dance of Death. Colourful and elaborate, the stained glass details four small painted panels each with their own title: Der Triumph des Todes (The Triumph of Death), Der Blinde (The Blind), Der Advorat (The Advocate) and Der Reiche (The Rich). It is set into a deep box frame that would’ve originally been backlit.
The Danse Macabre or Dance of Death is an allegorical concept that dates from the medieval period. It involves the dead summoning individuals from various walks of life to dance to the grave. Since its conception, the Danse Macabre has influenced various works of art, carvings, music, poetry and literature.
