Object Description
Gilt-bronze and malachite topped figural centre table
French, Early 20th Century
Height 78cm, diameter 69cm
Stylistically indebted to both the Louis XVI and French Empire period, this excellent low centre-table or gueridon is a fine antique piece, cast in ormolu (gilt-bronze) and inlaid with malachite upper surface. Circular, with a trio of tapering legs, cast as female herms or winged-caryatids, a central ormolu column underneath is joined to each leg with slender arms cast as acanthus leaves. The combination of slender and foliate forms with bold figurative elements demonstrates the stylistic influences of the refined Louis XVI with the grand, ostentatious Empire style, as such it synthesises the merits of both, to create a striking, elegant and regal antique furniture piece, at home in any suitably sophisticated interior.
