This wonderful writing desk, crafted from ebonised wood, gilt bronze, and brass and tortoiseshell marquetry, is a superb example of Boulle style furniture. The writing desk is supported by four curved cabriole legs, each leg raised on a gilt bronze scrolled foot below and mounted at the top with a gilt bronze mask. The legs support the tabletop, below which runs the apron; moreover, the front of the apron houses a large drawer. The ebonised wood surfaces of the desk—whether the tabletop, the legs, or the apron—are profusely decorated with marquetry inlays, wherein tortoiseshell and brass have been inlaid in a variety of foliate and geometrical forms. Complementing the wonderful inlays, the gilt bronze mounts throughout are superbly cast and finished. The end effect is splendid: the desk is a visual feast in all respects.
