Produced in the manner of the celebrated Russian jeweller Fabergé, this wonderful little object is a container for caviar—a fact made patently clear by the delicately wrought sturgeon finial that surmounts the lid.
The piece is crafted from the finest of materials, including cut glass, guilloché enamel, vermeil (or gilded silver), and gemstones. The spherical glass container includes a glass liner—to hold the caviar. The top of the outer container is lined with a band of blue guilloché enamel and is closable by a lid. This lid is also decorated with guilloché enamel and extensive vermeil mounts, including the finial previously described. Although the work is designed to hold caviar, it would function as a beautifully jewellery box or simply a decorative object.
The vermeil is stamped with ‘88’, the Russian silvermark for 916 grade silver.
