Object Description
An earthenware green-glazed Han Dynasty vase with relief decoration, depicting a scene with animals including monkeys, dragons and hunting dogs.
This particular shape is known as a ‘hu’ , a baluster-shaped vase that was copied from bronze vessels. The dark green glaze is meant to imitate the patination of bronze. Such vases were made predominantly in the Yue region and were high-fired with a wash slip containing a high proportion of iron. The reaction between iron and heat causes the colour.
