Object Description

A finely moulded, hollowed sculpture of a naturalistically depicted horse head which dates to the Han Dynasty. The horse head is depicted with an elegant profile, accentuating the strong masculine physique and natural curve of its neck. It features prominent facial features, including engraved eyes, nostrils and a gaping mouth. This horse head might have been originally painted in polychrome pigments, with visible black pigment surviving on the surface.

Date: Circa 202 BC- AD 220

From the collection of a West Country gentleman, formed in 1970s.

Fine condition. Minor chips to the edges, with most of the original pigment visible to the surface
