Object Description

An attractive Hoi An porcelain cylindrical box decorated with blue and white designs. The lid features a flower with foliage surrounded by a blue background framed by a singular ring and a continuous band of single peony petals finished with another ring underneath. The side displays a repeated scrolling flower design across both the lid and base. This box does not open.

Date: Circa late 15th-early 16th century AD

Object History

From the Hoi An shipwreck, sank in the late 15th-early 16th century AD (approximately 1490). Recovered in the early 1990’s.

Object Condition

Fine condition. Some chipping and light abrasions, dulling of glazed surfaces due to seawater exposure.
