Alfred Charles Havell was born on 8 March 1855 into the Havell family of artists. He was the son of Edmund Havell Junior (1819-1899) and grandson of Edmund Havell (1778-1810). His great-grandfather was Luke Havell (1778-1810) the founder of the artistic dynasty who originated from Reading.
The family lived in Sloane Square, London where his father, who painted hunting scenes and racehorse portraits, taught him art. He lived at other addresses in London throughout his career, later settling at 116 King Henry’s Road, South Hampstead where he remained for the rest of his life. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878 and 1884 and at some point began working for George Poole Fores, head of the Fores Gallery in Piccadilly as a book illustrator.
Havell specialised in racehorse portraits and although did produce a number of portraits of people he was best known for his sporting scenes featuring jockeys on racehorses. He died on 13 March 1928.
Examples of his paintings can be found in the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and & Sporting Art.
The works are housed in their original period gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
