This Indian rosewood table is a truly exquisite piece of furniture, which is elaborately decorated with inlaid ivory designs. It was created in c.1910, making it over 100 years old.
The table features a circular top, which is beautifully decorated with rings of inlaid ivory ornament. These designs depict stylised foliate motifs, scrolling vines, bands of diamonds, birds and fruit trees. The edge of the table is scalloped. The table top is supported on a waisted stem, the top of which is decorated with ivory trails of foliage, and the bottom with ivory diamonds. The stem stands on a triform base, which features foliate and geometric ivory ornament, and is topped, on its three ends, by stylised peacock sculptures. The peacocks—which are historically symbols of wealth, ostentatious display and beauty—have fanned train feathers. Their tails, wings and breasts are inlaid with ivory.
