Object Description

Amazing provenance on this fine Isfahan carpet woven on a silk foundation, previously owned by Prime Minister Harold Wilson back in the 1960’s.  The Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi visited the UK back in 1959 and 1965, and from our understanding it was a given as a gift to the then Prime Minister Harold Wilson.  We have the original receipt showing it was purchased for £12,000 back in 1984 from M.Wilson at 5 Ashley Gardens, which was their current home.  Please view all the images to see the original receipt and the amazing quality.

Isfahan is situated virtually in the centre of Persia, and was once the capital city. The rugs are woven in the city itself and the surrounding villages. Starting in the early 17th century, their name was renowned throughout Europe – this has continued to the present day. Although rug making was interrupted by the Afghan invasion, it quickly re-established itself as a major centre for the finest handmade carpets. This example show cases why Isfahan are famous for weaving the most detailed, beautiful fine carpets.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment. Please request a home visit to see this elegant wool and silk Isfahan carpet in your own home.
