Object Description

This charming carved seashell features a cameo relief of Mars, the god of War in the Roman pantheon. Standing on a chariot pulled by a pair of horses, Mars, who is nude but for his helmet, carries his spear. Below the depiction of Mars, the lower portion of the carved relief is filled with foliate forms with the title ‘Marte’ intertwined. The natural colours of the seashell have been utilised by the artist to lend the carved relief a feeling of depth. The shell stands on a wooden plinth and is signed ‘A. V. T.’
