Object Description

This table is remarkable for its circular top, which boasts an exceptionally large and beautiful micro-mosaic. The mosaic depicts a variety of Roman monuments, which were created by painstakingly inlaying thousands of tiny individual glass squares (called tesserae).

At the centre of the table, there is a medallion containing a micro-mosaic of the Vatican City, with Saint Peter’s Basilica in the distance and the obelisk in the square before it. This is set within a circular frame inlaid with lapis lazuli, the precious deep blue gemstone. The table top is further decorated by eight micro-mosaic wedges which encircle the central work. Moving clockwise from the piece directly below the image of the Vatican City, these micro-mosaics depict the Colosseum, the Temple of Hercules Victor, the Ponte and Castel Saint’ Angelo, a gateway in the Aurelian Walls, the Pantheon, the Arch of Titus, Capitoline Hill, and the Roman Forum. These architectural views are framed by a circular micro-mosaic meander (Greek key) border.

The micro-mosaic table top is edged by a wooden band which is carved with flowers and leaves. It stands on a single reeded wooden stem on three curved legs, which are decorated with carvings of foliage and flowers.

Table top normal: Height 71cm, diameter 71cm
Table top tilted: Height 117cm, diameter 71cm
