Italian Orientalist watercolour by Gabrini
Italian, late 19th Century
Frame: Height 95cm, width 130cm
Sheet: Height 60cm, width 95cm
This superb watercolour painting is by the Italian artist Pietro Gabrini. The work depicts an interior courtyard: five young European women laze by a pool, which hosts a swan; a sixth woman plays a musical instrument, entertaining the group. The group of women likely form a harem, and the decoration of the interior space is distinctly Islamic: a Persian rug is placed in the foreground, while a pilaster in the background features traditional Islamic style carved decorative motifs. The painterly manner is fine and accomplished, while the colour palette is vibrant.
The painting, which is contained within a carved giltwood frame, is signed and situated lower right ‘P. Gabrini. Roma’.
