Object Description

An Important Soup Tureen.
Very Fine Martele decoration to the surface with applied bead bands to the base & knob.
French silver assay marks & makers poinçon. Circa 1950s
Pieces in Solid Silver by Jean Despres are particularly rare as he predominately made in base metal, pewter for his early work & then silvered metal for his later pieces.

Object History

Jean Despres was one of the most important artisan craftman in metal & silver.
Jean Despres came from a family of artisan metal workers & silversmiths & his family had premises in Avallon, when he moved from Paris he took over the shop & worked from there until his death.
The Despres family bequeathed a collection of his pieces & design archive to the museum in Avallon & also to the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
