Object Description
Chinese early 18th Century deep moulded blue and white plate painted with an European Subject pattern.. Made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi at the kilns at Jingdezhen for export to Europe. The decoration is based on a Dutch Etching showing a busy river port.
The typical weighted swing bridge used by the Dutch over the rivers can be seen along with a ‘pagoda’ like toll booth, even the Dutch barges have a Chinese ‘Junk’ look.
The perspective is slightly off as the Guard/watchman appears to be floating in the air but actually he is stood on the wharf.
The underside is painted with trailing flowers and foliage and to the centre of the base a double circle surrounds the Jade mark or Yue mark
Excellent colour and subject matter
