The scene depicted, stems from the recollections of the artist on his many voyages through the Northwest Passage aboard the Lindblad Explorer. “Walruses are unreservedly lovely. In many ways they are like maritime elephants. They have elephantine charm and an elephantine texture, and texture is very much what this picture is all about” (extract from Wildlife and Wilderness).
