Object Description

Late Ming early Transitional blue and white garlic necked bottle vase made at Jingdezhen during the reign of the Emperor Chongzhen, the last of the Ming Emperors.
most Kraak bottle vase are straight necked this has what Europeans term a garlic neck due to the round section at the top. This is painted with a petal type decoration to make it look like a closed bud of the lotus flower.
the main body is painted in panels with an alternating design of either items associated with the scholar or flowering sprays of auspicious flowers.
This type of design for Kraak bottle vases is found on the original ‘Hatcher Cargo’ which sank c1642 so giving a good time line.
