The bronze is signed ‘E Carlier’, with foundry stamp and inscribed ‘Maison Marnyhac, 1 rue del la Paix’. It is in fine original condition.
Emile-François Carlier was born in Paris in 1827. He studied under Feuchère and made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1859. He had a studio at 22 Quai Jemmapes and continued to exhibit until his death in 1879. Carlier also exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français, Paris. The original version of this bronze was submitted to the Salon in 1865 (no. 2896) and was mentioned in the Livrets des Salon in 1865, p.384. The statue was so well received that Carlier submitted a version in marble (no. 3462) a year later in 1866.
