Object Description
Large carved poplar armorial bearing the arms of a Bishop Prince (the ruler of a Principality who is also a Bishop) decorated with polychrome and gilt. The gilding is lustrous and original and the burgundy red polychrome (also original) is on a green bole for the leaves and a cream bole for the flags, the bole (ground) showing where the red has rubbed through wear and age. The crown which could only be used by rulers is finely carved and surmounted by a brass finial in the form of a stylised cross. Italy, late 17th / early 18th century.
