Object Description
Large Chinese nephrite and agate flower model in a cloisonné enamel planter
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 45cm, width 38cm, depth 31cm
Crafted from agate, nephrite, and cloisonné enamel, this flower model is an example of fine Chinese craftsmanship of the 20th century.
The planter is made using the very complex cloisonné enamelling technique whereby thin metal wires are arranged in interesting shapes and filled with enamel. The main cartouche, framed by a scrolling red and yellow border, is filled with a cherry blossom tree and a bird. Surrounding the scene is a plethora of white coloured scrolls, vibrant green leaves, and polychrome flowers. All are set among a blue ground. The upper and lower edges of the planter are gilt.
Emerging from the planter is a number of long, metal, thread-covered branches. These terminate with pale agate leaves which, when put together create rich, bloomed flowers.
Their stigmas are crafted using bright orange beads. Interspersed among the bloomed examples are ones in their bud state, adding interest to the composition. Below the flowers are large nephrite jade leaves.
The simple, yet refined flower composition paired with the intricately decorated planter makes this objet d’art a desirable addition to one’s collection.
