Large floral micro-mosaic by the Vatican Mosaic Studio
Italian, c. 1870
Frame: Height 57cm, width 46cm, depth 6cm
Plaque: Height 46cm, width 34cm, depth 0.5cm
This magnificent micro-mosaic depicts a bouquet of flowers set against a black background, which serves to enhance the vibrancy of the colours of the mosaic. The image has been created from countless tesserae of a wide variety of shapes and colours, each tessera delicately placed. The work, unusually large, is a superb example of this ancient craft. It is contained within an ornate frame.
The piece is the work of the Vatican Mosaic Studio, a leading producer of pieces such as this from its foundation in 1727.
