Large French Baroque style gilt bronze and porcelain mantel clock
French, mid 19th Century
Height 71cm, width 43cm, depth 21cm
This elegant mantel clock is crafted in the Baroque style from gilt bronze and porcelain. The clock features a rectangular form case, which is inset with a large and impressive porcelain plaque painted after a work by the Baroque period Spanish artist Murillo. The plaque is flanked by twin gilt bronze columns, which are moulded with fine foliate detailing and classicising motifs. The base of the clock case is similarly adorned, profusely moulded with scrolling foliage, and raised on griffin form feet. The case is surmounted by a pediment containing a circular clock dial, which is signed for the maker ‘Silvani’, as is the movement.
