Object Description
Large French Neoclassical style gilt bronze and wood display cabinet
French, late 19th Century
Height 260cm, width 227cm, depth 58cm
This very large display cabinet is an exceptional example of the French Neoclassical style, and a superb piece of late 19th Century craftsmanship. The display cabinet is wrought from wood mounted with gilt bronze and features glazed doors and mirror backings.
The cabinet is comprised of three individual cabinet bays: one large central cabinet, and two smaller, shallower flanking cabinets. All three are set behind single glazed doors, and all three contain three glass shelves and mirrored back and side boards.
The refined, linear Neoclassical structure of the cabinet is accented with superb gilt bronze mounts, all wrought in the same Neoclassical style. The mounts include a frieze of rinceaux above the central cabinet, a foliate spray below, and a crowning crest of crossed quiver and torch. The side cabinets are topped with cornucopias, and the entablature of the entire piece is surmounted by four pinecone finials.
