A very rare large scale ivory devotional model of Christ, originally mounted on a cross, the outstretched arms connected to the body with dowels and pegs, the veins and muscles detailed and the extended fingers naturalistically treated. The palms with nail holes. The head of Christ is lowered and bears a crown of thorns, his hair and beard carefully detailed in a stylised manner. His eyes closed and facial features sympathetically treated.
The elongated body follows the curve of the tusk, his chest sculpted with muscle and bone and a prominent spear wound; around his waist a simple loin cloth hangs tied off with a rope. The overlapping legs with a single nail through the feet. Like the hands, the feet are naturalistically detailed.
