Large Meiji period bronze koro incense burner
Japanese, late 19th Century
Height 39cm, width 16cm, depth 11cm
This wonderful koro—a type of Japanese incense burner—is deftly crafted from patinated bronze. The koro features an ovoid body supported by four feet below a waisted socle. The top of the body is surmounted by a lid in the form of a seated figure, while the surfaces throughout are moulded and finished with a host of Japanese style motifs.
The koro is marked in Japanese script.
