Large Neoclassical black marble pedestal
Italian, Late 19th Century
Height 81.5cm, width 56cm, depth 56cm
While the design and style of this piece is simple and unassuming, the grandeur, presence, and pride of place it affords to a suitably chosen display is far from slight. Made in Italy in the late nineteenth century, probably for the purpose of displaying marble sculpture, the texture and finish is infused with a series of white ripples and lines that afford the piece a real sense of history and presence, its complementary and generous purpose heightened by its simple round and octagonal geometry.
