Depicting Carn Voel Head, Mill Bay, Cornwall, this superb marine was executed by the British artist, David James, in 1887, in oil-on-canvas, set within a carved giltwood frame. Born in Ireland with the name Joseph Donahue, James moved to Britain and, from 1872, earned a reputation as one of the finest late nineteenth century painters of marine landscapes, seascapes, and coastal views, particularly around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Working exclusively in oil-on-canvas, James had an exceptional talent for the way he rendered the power of the ocean, the atmosphere, and the dynamics of waves crashing across rock and sand. James, like the artist Henry Moore, made the sea itself the primary focus of his oeuvre; his best works are those such as this, where the occasional extra element is found: a distant ship, a cliff in the background, but where the central subject is nothing less than the ocean itself, the central tension the wave crashing across rock in the foreground.

James exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, multiple times between 1886, and 1897. This work is signed ‘D. James,’ and dated ‘(18)87’, to the lower right, with a further dedication plaque on the front of the frame.
