Object Description
Large silver plate charger of the ‘Battle of the Amazons’ by Elkington & Co.
English, Mid-19th Century
Height 4cm, diameter 68cm
This wonderful piece is a magnificent silver-plate charger by the esteemed, leading Victorian firm Elkington & Co., and depicts the Battle of the Amazons to a design by Antoine Vechte first shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
The V&A notes that ‘the original, of silver, by Antonio Vechte, is in the possession of the King of Prussia,’ – such was the popularity and acclaim of the original that Elkington sought to maximise the success, recreating the piece with exceptional chargers such as this, where the superb artistic design is rendered with exceptional skill, the figures and cavalry flowing beautifully from one to the other, the finish immaculate.
The piece is framed with a circular border with masks and scrolling acanthus, and it is marked on the reverse, ‘Elkington, 795.’
