Light blue and gilded Bohemian glass Huqqa base
Bohemian, late 19th Century
Height 26cm, diameter 14cm
This huqqa base is made from overlay glass, typifying the supreme glass production coming from Bohemia in the 19th Century (today part of the Czech Republic). The history of glass making in this region is well documented and celebrated and a piece like this was made to be exported and sold in Persia (today Iran). The light blue and clear glass body has been jewelled and decorated with gilded detailing, with panels towards the bottom painted with portraits of Persian Kings from the Qajar period, including Naser al-Din Shah and Mozaffar al-Din Shah, as well as Persian script.
