This exquisite enamel panel depicts a young woman carrying a child on her back on a walk. The portrait is half length, and the woman’s body is turned so that we see her face in profile.
The portraits of the two figures are naturalistic in style, their facial features carefully rendered using short, well-blended brushstrokes. The woman’s eyes are cast to the space before her as she walks, a thoughtful expression on her face. The young boy, by contrast, looks out at the viewer, engaging with us. Both figures have fair hair, which is partially covered by a bonnet, worn by the woman, and sunhat, by the boy. The lady wears an elegant pink outfit, with lace frills on her sleeves. The fine quality of her clothing implies that she was a woman of high social standing. The background, on the right, is filled with the leaves of trees, which open up, on the left, to reveal a clearing with a lake in the distance.
A giltwood frame, carved with beading, twisting forms and foliage, encloses the piece. The back of the panel is indistinctly signed.
This piece is evidence of the superiority of Limoges enamel wares. The portrait’s theme of the mother and child is one which is beautiful and timeless.
