Object Description

An exceptional Doulton Lambeth aesthetic movement beaker vase with a silver-plated rim by renowned artist Louisa J Davis and dated 1882.
Louisa J Davis worked as a distinguished artist at Doulton Lambeth between 1873 and 1894 and was renowned as a specialist in designs based on conventionalized flower and leaf designs. Some of her designs reflect an Indian or Persian influence.
This stylish stoneware beaker vase stands on a narrow unglazed round foot with recessed base and with a shallow wide round body with a tall widening conical shaped upper body the rim mounted with a deep silver plated edge. The body of the vase is decorated with leaf patterning around the lower foot below a brown beaded rim, the body with stylized scrolling flowers on stems incorporating horse shoe like designs applied in relief against an all over white slip foliate ground. The vase is painted in tones of blue and brown and has impressed makers marks to the base along with artist marks for Louisa J Davis and assistant marks for Alice Lacy and Fanny Clark. The vase is numbered 306 and dated 1882.
