Medieval Gritstone Leopard

Object Description

Mid 15th Century Gritstone Head of a Leopard, Staffordshire, circa 1460.

The sculptured profile carving of a Leopard head with gaping toothed mouth, carved in 3/4 profile with flat reverse side.

The carving is in red / white Staffordshire gritstone.

Object Condition

Vey good condition with natural weathering. English Gritstone is particularly hard wearing. The carving is made from a Gritstone found within the region of north Staffordshire, being a combined Red and White strata.
