Object Description

Ming blue and white klapmutsen porcelain bowl made for the European market. excellent painting of a more unusual design. the painting shows a Confucian scholar seated on a promontory on a fenced river bank.
the bowl is moulded and painted with a strong colour. the slightly barbed rim is slightly upturned.
In Rinaldi on Kraak porcelain this is categorized as type IV. This is based on the four reserves on the everted rim which are painted with flower sprays, while the sides are painted with ogival shaped panels which are in filled with peach and flower sprays. The underside has cursory roundels separated by lines.
Klapmutsen bowls are so shaped so that they supported the European spoon of the 17th century so it did not fall into the centre.
