Object Description

These extremely large vases are lavish, opulent works of porcelain and bronze, with every element elaborately and painstakingly crafted. Built in the Rococo style, the vases are designed for a grand entrance-way or room, and are truly exceptional pieces which will add 19th Century sophistication to a luxury interior. Particularly impressive are the painted scenes, or cartouches, which adorn the front and back of the body of each of the vases. The scenes on the front depict period interiors, with musicians in period dress, and on the reverse there are serene landscape scenes. The front cartouches bear the signature for ‘Leber’, an important decorator of porcelain in the 19th Century.

The cartouches are set on a ‘bleu celeste’ (turquoise blue) ground, which is decorated with elaborate parcel gilt floral motifs. The vases are mounted at either side with scrolling gilt bronze handles, in the form of acanthus leaves, and set on square gilt bronze bases. Both vases have large domed covers, each of which is surmounted by a gilt bronze cherub sitting cross-legged and holding flowers. The interlaced-L mark of the Sevres manufactory is impressed on each vase.
