Neoclassical style gilt bronze and malachite mantel clock
French, 19th Century
Height 58cm, width 43cm, depth 17cm
This fine mantel clock is crafted from gilt bronze and malachite (with the malachite veneer being a later addition) in the elegant Neoclassical style. The clock features a stepped gilt bronze mounted malachite base, which supports the malachite clock drum. The drum contains a silvered dial and is flanked by gilt bronze griffons. Most strikingly, a large gilt bronze figure of a Greek philosopher is seated beside the clock drum, his left elbow leaning atop of it and his right hand leafing through the pages of a gilt bronze book.
