This beautiful bed is crafted from rich, warm-coloured mahogany wood and elegantly decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts. In its style, this bed is inspired by furniture design of the French Louis XVI period (1774-1793).
The bed is composed of a tall headboard which is connected to a footboard by a bottom rail, and which is set on four feet. The bed’s headboard is topped by a shaped crest rail which is decorated with a gilt bronze motif, composed of a wreath, a burning torch crossed with a quiver of arrows, and a foliage branch. Gilt bronze pinecone finials decorate the ends of the headboard’s top rail. The upper section of the headboard is mounted with an openwork gilt bronze frieze which features stylised scrolled vines, inhabited by fauns playing musical instruments, birds, and animals. The frieze is centred on a classical mask which is flanked by a pair of goats. Gilt bronze square rosettes decorate the corners of the frieze. Below, the main area of the headboard is left plain and is framed by a gilt bronze border, with rosettes in its corners. The headboard is flanked by classical columns with gilt bronze bases and capitals. The upper sections of the columns are fluted and their flutes partially filled with gilt bronze husk trails.
The side bottom rails of the bed are decorated with gilt bronze bands and foliate motifs, composed of bows and arrows, quivers, flower trails, burning torches and wreaths. This rail links the headboard to the footboard, which is shorter in height. The footboard’s top rail is edged with a gilt bronze band and topped, on its corners, with foliate finials. The upper section of the board is, like the bed, decorated with an openwork gilt bronze frieze of scrolled and inhabited vines. At the centre of the footboard, there is a panel which is decorated with gilt bronze flower trails and swags, centred on a wreath. The footboard is flanked by a pair of cable fluted columns, their flutes filled with gilt bronze husk trails. The columns feature gilt bronze bases and capitals, and they’re topped by waisted, twisted and fluted gilt bronze features. The front bottom rail is decorated in a similar style to the sides. Short turned and tapered legs, on simple gilt bronze feet, raise the bed off the ground.
