This vase is a truly beautiful antique piece, which is finely decorated with sea-themed motifs. The vase’s ovoid body is topped by a neck with a flared mouth. The patinated bronze neck is encircled, at its base, by a gilt bronze gadrooned belt, and its mouth edged with a gilt bronze scalloped band. The vase’s patinated bronze ovoid body features, on both its front and reverse, a central gilt bronze classical mask of a sea god. These masks are flanked by gilt bronze panels, decorated with stylised sea horses. The vase is mounted with two handles, which take the form of term sculptures. These are cast as nude patinated bronze putti, with gilt bronze accessories, and tapering pillar-like lower bodies. The putti hold gilt bronze sea creatures in the crooks of their elbows.
The vase is set on a splayed stem, the top of which is encircled by gilt bronze gadrooned bands. The stem’s lower section is decorated with patinated and gilt bronze foliate and scale-like patterns. The vase stands on a gilt bronze base with canted corners, which is set on patinated bronze sea monster feet.
