Object Description

This nice quality Provincial Charles I silver apostle spoon was made in Exeter C1647 by RD which we believe to be the mark of Richard Deeble of Exeter who was apprenticed to Edward Anthony and freed in 1639 (Kents book of West Country spoons and their makers 1550-1750) and measures 7 1/8 inches in length, it has a gilded apostle to the top of the stem of St Matthew with a dove nimbus and is marked in the bowl with the town mark for Exeter and to the back of the stem with the makers mark struck thrice. The bowl bears the pin prick engraving of IT over 1647 to the back and is well formed with no signs of wear, a very nice spoon in very good condition weighing 1.70 ounces or 53 grams.
