Object Literature

Davis was a London landscape painter, who specialised in sporting scenes with dogs. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1881-1884. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street with titles including ‘Dust Cart – a London Street’, and ‘Waiting for a Job’. The Victorian era was an age of dog portraits, made popular by Queen Victoria. The obsession of the ruling classes with field sports led to a demand for artists such as Davis who was one of a band of painters celebrating sporting dogs. He was influenced by his contemporaries such as Thomas Blinks and George Derville Rowlandson. Davis’s works are painted in loose free flowing style that captures the animation and movement of the dogs beautifully.

The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
