Object Description
Orientalist view of a mosque by Leaver
British, early 20th Century
Frame: Height 45.5cm, width 56cm, depth 2cm
Sheet: Height 27cm, width 36.5cm
This watercolour on paper painting, by the English artist Noel Harry Leaver, depicts a distinctly Middle Eastern or North African urban setting, dominated by a domed mosque. To the front of the mosque, a small square is populated by a number of figures. The scene is light drenched, indicated the intense heat of the locale. Leaver as employed pale, washed colours to achieve this effect. Celebrated in his own day and collected ever since, Leaver was an accomplished Orientalist artist, and this watercolour is a superb example of his work.
The piece is signed lower left ‘Noel H. Leaver. A.R.C.A.’
